Boise St. gains seven first-place votes in poll

More AP Top 25 voters are buying into Boise State as the No. 1 team in the country.

Boise State gained seven first-place votes and closed in on No. 1 Alabama and No. 2 Ohio State as the top three teams in the first regular season Associated Press football poll held their spots from the preseason.

The Broncos remained third after a thrilling 33-30 victory against Virginia Tech on Monday night, receiving eight first-place votes and 1,399 points from the media panel, 13 points behind the Buckeyes.

Ohio State received four first-place votes and 1,412 points.

Saban: Alabama won't appeal Dareus suspension

CBSSports.comNo. 1 Alabama wont appeal defensive end Marcell Dareuss two-game suspension to the NCAA.

Coach Nick Saban said Monday "that issue is dead." He says there isnt enough precedent in similar cases to warrant an appeal.

He had indicated late last week that the school would try to get Dareus suspension cut to one game, allowing him to return for Saturdays visit from No. 19 Penn State.

Saban says the two-game hit was fair. Dareus was penalized for accepting nearly $2,000 in improper benefits from an agent on two trips to Miami.

Dalton keeps TCU's title hopes on track

And Andy Dalton wasnt about to sit around and watch the Horned Frogs lose bac and ruin a shot at another BCS-busting season.

The four-year starter set TCUs all-time record for wins by a quarterback, piloting the sixth-ranked Frogs to a 30-21 victory over No. 24 Oregon S surpassing Pro Football Hall of Famer Sammy Baugh.

"We knew all we had to do was win by one," said Dalton, the NCAAs active leader in wins.

Dalton ran for two touchdowns and threw for another in the Frogs come-from most of whom wore TCU purple.

Herzlich leads BC onto field in first game since '08

CBSS Boston College linebacker Mark Herzlich has returned to the field for Saturdays season-opener against Weber State after missing the entire 2009 season while recovering from cancer.

Herzlich, the 2008 Atlantic Coast Conference Defensive Player of the Year, missed last year as he underwent treatment for a rare form of cancer called Ewings Saand took his helmet off and looked up into the student section, spreading his arms wide, as the crowd roared.

Tar Heels missing 12 players as they travel to LSU

Three more North Carolina defensive starters are not traveling with the team for Saturdays game in Atlanta against LSU, meaning the 18th-ranked Tar Heels could be without 15 players amid an ongoing NCAA investigation.

School spokesman Kevin Best said that linebackers Quan Sturdivant and Bruce Carter, and safety Deunta Williams werent on the team plane as the Tar Heels prepared to leave Friday morning for Atlanta.
